THE AMERICAN DREAM THROUGH THE EYES OF A CZECH WOMAN
Study stay at Moravian University, Bethlehem, USA, WS 2024/2025
When I landed at JFK airport in New York in August, it was like a dream come true - the American dream. I had the opportunity to spend the next four months getting to know this beautiful country and everything related to it. Thanks to Merrill's program and also thanks to the financial support from the Faculty of Arts, from the Freemover programme, I spent one semester at the American Moravian University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The history of the university is linked to our nation, and I came across Czech references several times during my studies. Choosing the subjects, I would study at the Moravian, was harder than I thought. All of them were so interesting that I couldn't decide for a long time which ones I would take. In the end, I chose courses in graphic design, marketing, social media communication and public speaking. And I have to say it was a very good choice.
Besides studying, I also had the opportunity to travel in my free time. Thanks to that I visited places I had never dreamed of. It was an indescribable feeling to stand by Niagara Falls and listen to the overwhelming sound of the falling water or watch the sun set behind the skyscrapers of New York from the Brooklyn Bridge. The most powerful moment for me, however, was a visit to the 9/11 museum, during which I was left completely speechless several times. When I left the airport in Miami four months later, I couldn't believe it was all over. But I felt a huge sense of gratitude for all that I had been able to learn and experience in the USA. (LB)
